How to Write a CV for a Sales Job in Kenya
KaziKit · 19 August 2026

A sales CV in Kenya must lead with quantified results: targets achieved, revenue generated, clients acquired. Sales CVs live or die on numbers — yet most candidates omit them entirely. Employers hiring salespeople are buying proof that you can sell, so every line of your CV should carry evidence. Here is how to build one that gets you shortlisted.
What do sales recruiters want to see?
Sales is the one field where your CV can show, in black and white, whether you are good at the job. A recruiter hiring for a sales role — whether in banking, insurance, FMCG, real estate, telecoms, or SaaS — is scanning for one thing above all: proof that you hit numbers.
Specifically, they want to see:
- Targets and whether you hit them — "achieved 112% of a KSh 5M quarterly target."
- Revenue you generated or grew — "grew territory revenue by 28% in one year."
- Clients or accounts you won or managed — "acquired 40 new SME accounts."
- Products or markets you know — the sectors and customer types you have sold to.
- Consistency — a track record of performance over time, not one lucky quarter.
If your sales CV is a list of duties ("responsible for selling products to customers"), it tells a recruiter nothing. If it is a list of results with numbers, it tells them everything.
Putting numbers on your achievements
This is the single most important skill for a sales CV, and it is exactly where most Kenyan candidates fall short. Do not describe what you were responsible for — describe what you achieved, with figures.
- Weak: "Responsible for meeting sales targets." → Strong: "Consistently exceeded monthly targets, averaging 115% attainment over 18 months."
- Weak: "Sold insurance products to clients." → Strong: "Sold KSh 12M in premiums in my first year, ranking top 3 of 25 agents."
- Weak: "Managed customer accounts." → Strong: "Grew a portfolio of 60 SME accounts, increasing retention from 70% to 88%."
If you do not have exact figures, use honest, defensible estimates and ranges — "grew sales by roughly a quarter," "consistently among the top performers on the team." What you must not do is leave the numbers out entirely. A sales CV without numbers is a sales pitch with no price: nobody can act on it.
Structuring a sales CV
Lead with evidence of performance, and keep the structure tight:
- Contact details — name, phone, professional email, location. No photo.
- Professional summary (2–3 lines) — your sales field, years of experience, and your single strongest quantified result. Example: "Results-driven sales professional with 4 years in FMCG, having grown regional revenue by 32% and consistently exceeding quota."
- Key skills — the sales-specific ones: prospecting, negotiation, account management, CRM tools, specific product or sector knowledge.
- Professional experience — reverse chronological. For each role, lead every bullet with an achievement and a number, not a duty.
- Achievements / awards — top-performer rankings, president's club, target milestones. Sales rewards recognition, so surface it.
- Education and certifications.
- Referees — a sales manager who can vouch for your numbers is ideal.
Two pages maximum. And note: the "results-driven" style summary above is fine as a self-description in your own CV — just make sure the numbers underneath actually back it up.
Landing the sales role
A few final things that separate the sales CVs that get called from those that get filtered:
- Tailor to the specific role and sector. Selling insurance is not selling software. Match your CV's language and highlighted experience to the specific advert — mirror its terms, and lead with the most relevant results.
- Match the advert's targets. If the role emphasises new-business hunting, foreground your acquisition numbers; if it emphasises account management, foreground retention and growth.
- Keep it ATS-friendly — clean, single-column, standard headings — because large Kenyan employers screen with software first.
- Show energy and consistency — a steady record reads as reliable, which is exactly what a sales manager wants.
| Sales CV that gets called | Sales CV that gets filtered |
|---|---|
| Leads with quantified results | Lists duties and responsibilities |
| Targets, revenue, clients — with numbers | Vague "responsible for sales" |
| Tailored to the specific sales role | One generic CV for every sales job |
| Achievements and rankings surfaced | Wins buried or omitted |
| Clean, ATS-friendly format | Cluttered or graphics-heavy |
