How to Prepare for a Bank Interview in Kenya

To prepare for a bank interview in Kenya, research the bank, master the common competency and scenario questions, dress formally, and practise your answers out loud. Kenyan bank interviews follow predictable patterns — preparation, not luck, is what separates offers from rejections. Here are the questions banks actually ask and how to answer them.
What questions do Kenyan banks ask in interviews?
Bank interviews in Kenya — whether at a large tier-one bank, a mid-tier bank, or a microfinance institution — tend to draw from a familiar set of themes. Expect questions across four areas:
- About you and your motivation: "Tell me about yourself," "Why banking?", "Why this bank specifically?"
- Competency and behaviour: "Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer," "Describe a time you met a tough target," "How do you handle pressure?"
- Customer service and sales: banking is a sales-and-service business, so expect "How would you sell a product to a hesitant customer?" or "What does good customer service mean to you?"
- Integrity and judgement: because banks handle money and trust, questions like "What would you do if you noticed a colleague breaking a rule?" or "How do you handle confidential information?" are common.
They are not trying to trick you. They are checking whether you understand the business, can handle customers and pressure, and can be trusted with money and confidentiality.
How do you answer competency questions in a bank interview?
Competency questions — the "tell me about a time…" ones — are where most candidates either shine or stumble. The reliable way to answer them is the STAR method:
- Situation — briefly set the scene.
- Task — what was your responsibility?
- Action — what did you specifically do?
- Result — what was the outcome, ideally with a number?
For example, "Tell me about a time you met a difficult target" becomes: "At my previous role (Situation), I was set a target to recover KSh 2M in overdue accounts in a quarter (Task). I segmented the accounts by risk and personally followed up the top 20 (Action), recovering KSh 2.4M — 120% of target (Result)."
Prepare five or six STAR stories before the interview, covering targets, difficult customers, teamwork, integrity, and handling pressure. Most bank competency questions will fit one of them. See our full guide on how to ace a competency-based interview in Kenya.
What should you research before a bank interview in Kenya?
Walking into a bank interview without having researched the bank is the fastest way to lose. Before the day, know:
- What the bank does and who it serves — retail, SME, corporate, its main products.
- Recent news — results, expansions, new products, leadership changes.
- Its stated values — banks interview heavily against their values, so read them and be ready to show you embody them.
- The specific role — and how it fits into the branch or department.
- Basic banking awareness — current issues in the Kenyan banking sector, digital banking trends, and general financial literacy show you are genuinely interested.
Weaving one or two specific, current facts about the bank into your answers instantly separates you from candidates who clearly just want any job.
What should you wear to a bank interview in Kenya?
Banking is a formal, conservative industry — this is one sector where overdressing is the safe choice.
- Men: a suit, or at minimum smart formal trousers, a pressed shirt and tie, and polished shoes.
- Women: a formal suit, or a smart formal dress or blouse-and-trousers combination.
Keep it clean, conservative, and understated — you want them remembering your answers, not your outfit. See our broader guide on what to wear to a job interview in Kenya.
Should you follow up after a bank interview?
Yes — and most candidates skip this entirely, which is exactly why it works. Send a short email within 24 hours: thank the panel, reference one specific thing you discussed, and restate your interest in one line. It takes three minutes and puts you in front of them one more time, at a moment when they are deciding.
| Bank interview: do | Bank interview: avoid |
|---|---|
| Research the bank's values and recent news | Walking in knowing nothing about the bank |
| Prepare 5–6 STAR stories | Vague, unstructured answers |
| Dress formally and conservatively | Casual or flashy dressing |
| Show integrity and customer focus | Speaking badly about a past employer |
| Send a 24-hour follow-up email | Going silent after the interview |
Preparation is the whole game — and practising out loud, not just in your head, is what makes the difference on the day. Kenyan bank interviews reward the prepared. Do the research, practise your STAR answers out loud, dress the part, and follow up.
