How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in a Kenyan Interview

KaziKit · 31 May 2026

The question that sets the tone

Almost every interview in Kenya opens with some version of "tell me about yourself." It feels casual, but it is doing real work: the interviewer is deciding, in the first minute, whether to lean in or tune out. It is not an invitation to recite your life story — it is your chance to frame why you are the right person for this role.

Use the Present – Past – Future structure

The easiest way to give a clear, confident answer is to move through three short beats:

  • Present — who you are professionally right now.
  • Past — the experience that brought you here.
  • Future — why this role, and why now.

An example you can adapt

"I am an accounts assistant with three years' experience in a busy Nairobi retail firm, where I handle reconciliations and monthly reporting. Before that I trained in finance at KCA University and did my attachment at a SACCO, which is where I first fell in love with the numbers side of business. I am now looking to grow into a full accountant role, and this position stood out to me because of your focus on automation — something I have been driving in my current team."

That is about 45 seconds. It is specific, relevant, and it ends by connecting to their job.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reciting your CV line by line — they already have it.
  • Going too personal — your marital status, home village, or family details are not relevant here. Keep it professional.
  • Rambling — aim for 60 to 90 seconds, then stop and let them lead.

Practise out loud

The difference between a shaky answer and a sharp one is almost always practice. Say your answer out loud a few times until it feels natural — not memorised, but comfortable.

If you want feedback before the real thing, KaziKit's AI Interview Coach lets you practise real questions and scores your answers on relevance, structure, and confidence — so you walk in ready.
